Social Media algorithms are sets of rules and calculations used by the social media platform to determine what kind of content to show its users. These algorithms analyze the behavior, preferences, and interactions to prioritize and display posts and videos a that have a higher chance of being engaged with by the user. The ethical dilemma… The positives are that algorithms improve user experience by showing relevant content and help businesses and creators reach their targeted audience. The negative aspect it may include are the algorithms often prioritize content that triggers emotional responses, which can lead to misinformation or polarization, they can create “echo chambers” which limits exposer to other viewers, and users are not fully in control of what they are seeing. they are being subtly manipulated. Curated content can lead to comparison, self-esteem issues, or addictive behavior. Do the platforms address these concerns? I personally think that the ethical balance between the user’s experience, and profit has a dark and a light side to it for sure. I think we can address these ethical issues by allowing the users to have some control over what is popping up on their feeds. As well as user education to let people know if what they are viewing is not helping them and is actually hurting them, they can change it.
